What Happens to Pippa Middleton When Kate Becomes Queen?

Royal Sisters at a Palace Ceremony

Will Pippa Middleton receive a royal title when her sister becomes queen consort? Here is what royal tradition, her family connections and the possibility of a future ceremonial role reveal.

Pippa Middleton has spent much of her adult life in the public eye, largely because of her close relationship with her older sister, Catherine, Princess of Wales. But while Catherine’s future is closely connected to the British throne through her marriage to Prince William, Pippa’s path is likely to remain quite different.

When Prince William eventually becomes king, Catherine is expected to become queen consort. The transition would represent a major change in the couple’s official responsibilities, but it would not automatically change the status of Catherine’s parents or siblings.

So what would happen to Pippa? Could she receive a royal title, take on official duties or become more involved in the royal household?

The answer is more complicated than many people might expect. Although Pippa could potentially support her sister in an informal capacity, there is no confirmed plan to give her an official royal position. Her future will depend on the decisions of the Royal Family, her own preferences and the traditions governing royal titles.

1. Would Pippa Middleton Become a Princess or Receive a Royal Title?

The short answer is no—not automatically.

Pippa is not a member of the Royal Family in her own right. She is the younger sister of Catherine, Princess of Wales, and is married to businessman James Matthews.

Royal titles are not normally passed to the brothers and sisters of a future queen consort simply because their relative becomes queen. Catherine’s change in status would not automatically make Pippa a princess, duchess or another titled royal.

The distinction is important because royal titles are connected to specific rules, marriages, family relationships and formal decisions by the monarch. Being closely related to a senior royal does not, by itself, confer a title.

The same principle applies to Catherine’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton. Their relationship with the future king and queen does not automatically make them titled members of the monarchy.

Accordingly, headlines suggesting that Pippa will become a princess when William takes the throne should be treated with caution. There is currently no confirmed announcement that she will receive such a title.

2. Could Pippa Become One of Kate’s Royal Companions?

Although a royal title is unlikely to follow automatically, there is another possibility that has attracted attention from royal commentators: Pippa could potentially serve as one of Catherine’s companions.

The concept has a precedent in the modern Royal Family. When Camilla became queen consort, she introduced a group of trusted women known as companions, a modern alternative to the traditional ladies-in-waiting.

These companions can provide personal support and accompany the queen on selected occasions. The role is different from being a member of the Royal Family by birth or marriage, and it does not confer a royal title.

Some royal commentators have suggested that Pippa might be a natural choice if Catherine decides to establish a similar arrangement in the future. The sisters have a longstanding relationship, and Pippa served as Catherine’s maid of honour at her 2011 wedding to Prince William.

However, this remains speculation rather than an official plan. Catherine has not publicly confirmed that she intends to appoint Pippa to such a role, and Pippa may prefer to continue concentrating on her own family and professional commitments.

3. Why Pippa and Kate’s Close Relationship Matters

Catherine and Pippa have been close for years, and their relationship has attracted public attention since the 2011 royal wedding.

Pippa became internationally recognisable after serving as her sister’s maid of honour. Her appearance at Westminster Abbey generated enormous media interest, and she subsequently developed her own public profile.

Despite that attention, Pippa has generally maintained a more private life than her sister. She has attended important royal occasions, including major family celebrations, but she is not a working royal with an established programme of official engagements.

The distinction between the sisters is significant. Catherine’s responsibilities involve representing the monarchy, supporting charitable causes and undertaking official duties alongside Prince William. Pippa is free to choose her own commitments without the same institutional expectations.

Their family relationship could make Pippa a trusted source of personal support if Catherine eventually becomes queen consort. Nevertheless, closeness alone would not establish a formal role, and any appointment would depend on Catherine’s wishes and the arrangements made for her household.

4. Pippa Has Her Own Family and Professional Life

Another important consideration is Pippa’s life outside the royal spotlight.

She married James Matthews in 2017, and the couple have three children: Arthur, Grace and Rose. Their family life and personal commitments are separate from the official responsibilities carried out by Catherine and William.

A role supporting the queen consort, even if largely ceremonial, could involve attending selected events and spending time on duties connected to the royal household. Whether Pippa would want to take on those responsibilities is unknown.

Royal commentators have noted that she has her own life and family commitments, making it difficult to predict whether she would accept such an invitation if one were offered.

It is therefore more accurate to describe a potential companion role as one possibility rather than an expected outcome.

Pippa could continue to support her sister privately without becoming part of the official royal working structure. Family support does not necessarily require a title or a public-facing position.

5. Could Pippa Become Lady of Glen Affric Through Her Husband?

There is another title-related question surrounding Pippa, but it is separate from Catherine’s future position.

Pippa’s husband, James Matthews, is connected to the Glen Affric estate in the Scottish Highlands through his family. His father, David Matthews, has been associated with the estate and the description of Laird of Glen Affric.

James is expected to succeed to that family position, and Pippa may consequently be described socially as Lady of Glen Affric.

However, an important distinction applies: “Laird” is a traditional Scottish designation associated with an estate, not a peerage title equivalent to a duke, earl or baron. The description does not make Pippa a royal or grant her the status of a member of the British Royal Family.

This potential change would arise from her husband’s family connection, not from Catherine becoming queen consort.

In other words, Pippa’s future association with Glen Affric and any possible role alongside Catherine are two entirely separate matters.

6. Would Pippa’s Children Receive Royal Titles?

Pippa and James’s children are not automatically entitled to royal titles because their aunt is the Princess of Wales or may eventually become queen consort.

Their position is different from that of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, who are children of the heir to the throne and hold their own royal titles.

Pippa’s children belong to the Matthews family. Their relationship with their royal cousins may attract public interest, but it does not make them working royals or place them in the direct line of succession.

The distinction reflects the way the monarchy separates the immediate royal household from the wider families of its members. Not every relative of a monarch receives a title or an official responsibility.

Unless a separate formal decision or applicable title arrangement changes their status, Pippa’s children will continue to have their own identities outside the working Royal Family.

7. What Would Change When Kate Becomes Queen Consort?

When Prince William eventually becomes king, Catherine is expected to take the position of queen consort. Her public responsibilities would likely expand as she supports the monarch, undertakes ceremonial engagements and continues her charitable work.

The transition would not necessarily mean that every member of Catherine’s family becomes more involved in royal duties.

Pippa might attend significant family occasions and could potentially provide private support to her sister. If Catherine chose to appoint companions, Pippa could be considered a possible candidate, but there is no guarantee that she would receive such an invitation or accept it.

The royal household would also continue to distinguish between official duties and private family relationships. Catherine’s parents, siblings and other relatives can remain important parts of her personal life without being appointed to formal positions.

This is one reason why claims about Pippa’s future should be approached carefully. A change in Catherine’s title would not, on its own, establish a new role for her sister.

The Bottom Line: Pippa’s Future Is Not Automatically Tied to Kate’s Crown

Pippa Middleton’s connection to the future queen consort places her close to one of Britain’s most prominent royal figures, but it does not guarantee that she will receive a royal title or become an official member of the working monarchy.

She could potentially serve as one of Catherine’s companions if such an arrangement were introduced, although no appointment has been confirmed. Separately, her husband’s family connection to Glen Affric may lead to the use of the description Lady of Glen Affric, but that is not equivalent to a royal title.

For now, Pippa remains focused on her own family and life outside the monarchy’s official structure. Her relationship with Catherine is likely to remain important regardless of whether she takes on a public role in the future.

Ultimately, the question is not simply whether Pippa will receive a title. It is whether she would want a more visible position—and whether Catherine would choose to include her in any future support structure.

Until an official announcement is made, any claims about Pippa becoming a princess or receiving a formal royal appointment remain speculation.
